Nokia releases code to open source community
Nokia Corp. said on Tuesday it will open the source code for Python for S60 phones.
Python is an open source programming language that is freely available to developers.
Last year, Nokia began offering Python for S60 for free from its Web site. The move allowed developers to write applications using Python for the widely used S60 Nokia phones. Developers could also install their new applications on a S60 handset to test them.
Now, Nokia is contributing the core of Python for S60 back to the open source community in a bid to encourage more development on the platform.
The source code will be posted to SourceForge.net, the Web site that hosts open source development projects.
Late last year, Nokia launched a Web site -- http://opensource.nokia.com -- to detail its open source initiatives. The site contains information about Python for S60 and Maemo, the open source browser for the S60 platform, as well as other projects.
