LinuxWorld: Oracle offers free Linux starter pack
ORACLE ON TUESDAY announced a promotion to get developers started on Linux using the Oracle9i application server and the latest version of Oracle8i database.
The Redwood Shores, Calif.-based company's Oracle Fast Start kit is free and includes technical overviews of Oracle's application server and database products on Linux, a free trial sampler of Oracle9i Application Server for Linux, and access to the Oracle Technology Network Linux member forums. It also includes MySQL-to-Oracle Migration Workbench on the latest version of Red Hat's Linux OS. Oracle estimates that more than 4,000 customers use Oracle products on Linux.
In other Linux-related news on Tuesday, Oracle at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in New York announced the immediate availability of Oracle Internet File System and Oracle Parallel Server on the open-source operating system. Oracle Internet File System, part of the Oracle database, allows developers to more easily write and deploy content management and collaborative applications using open, Internet programming languages, including Java and XML, according to Oracle.
Oracle Parallel Server allows applications running on any server in a cluster instant access to all data in a database. It will support up to a 4-node, 8-way cluster. Using Oracle Parallel Server, hardware servers work together to manage unpredictable workloads and, in case of a system failure, applications will continue to run on the remaining nodes with minimum interruption or loss of data, Oracle said.
Oracle Internet File System and Oracle Parallel Server are also available on Unix, Microsoft Windows and Windows NT, Sun Microsystems Solaris, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, and Compaq Computer Tru64.
