Compaq to stop selling 32-way Unisys server
Re-evaluating its database server strategy, Compaq on Monday announced it will
stop selling a re-branded version of the Unisys ES7000, a 32-bit server capable
of running 32 Intel processors using Microsoft's Windows 2000 data center.
Compaq will focus on a "scale-out strategy" for 32-bit servers, promoting
the deployment of multiple eight-way Compaq Proliant servers instead of the
larger Unisys offering, according to Tim Golden, director of enterprise server
product marketing for Houston-based Compaq.
The 32-way Unisys server was adopted by companies such as Compaq, Dell, and
Hewlett-Packard to compete in an ultra-high-end Intel-based server market. The
ES7000 remains the only Intel-based server that can run Windows 2000 across
32 Intel chips.
But according to Golden, 95 percent of Compaq customers who deployed Windows
2000 did so on eight-way servers, "so we are reacting," he said.
Compaq is in the process of developing its own 32-way server, code-named Cascade,
according to Golden. However, Cascade will be a 64-bit server based on Intel's
IA-64 McKinley chip, Golden said.
