ORACLE IS ADDING support for the new Linux 2.4 open-source operating system kernel to its Oracle 9i application server and Oracle 8i database, the company said in a statement Tuesday.

Oracle said it is the first software company to offer support for the much-anticipated new kernel that Linux creator Linus Torvalds announced on Friday.

The Redwood Shores, Calif., company has been touting efforts to make its entire software portfolio Linux-compatible, having decided as early as February 1999 to upgrade Linux to a "tier-one" platform in its operating systems strategy.
