Versant to open-source tools, spearhead Eclipse project

Versant is making some of its object-relational management tools open source, and plans to work with the Eclipse Foundation to add better J2EE development tools to that open source IDE. Is this a real embrace of the open source philosophy - or a desperate move from a company that was just delisted from NASDAQ?
