Web services: All Microsoft or none?

Web services were originally intended as a tool to help connect disparate systems. Microsoft has been churning out a series of Web services-based development tools - but they're based on the company's own proprietary XML formats, and thus encourage customers to stay with a Microsoft solution end-to-end. OASIS and other standards bodies are striving to offer alternatives.
