How will Sun's layoffs affect the channel?

Last week, Sun Microsystems announced that it would lay off somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 employees, or about 15 to 18 percent of its workforce. It wouldn't surprise me if other big tech companies soon follow suit.

Top 10: Once again, worrisome financial news prevails

Start to finish, the week was full of news related to the sorry state of the global economy, with Sun capping things off by announcing it will cut thousands of jobs. Casting a little hopeful light on yet another week of dismal news was optimism from IT professionals who say that, unlike with previous downturns, they aren't being ordered to make drastic cuts.

Sun is laying off 15 percent to 18 percent of its employees as part of a restructuring plan aimed at saving $700 million to $800 million a year, and its top software executive is leaving the company, Sun said Friday.

Sun slashes up to 18 percent of workforce

Sun announced Friday that it will cut up to 18 percent of its worldwide workforce to curb costs in the face of tough economic times.

Sun's board of directors approved a restructuring plan to slash costs by about US$700 million to $800 million annually, the company said in a statement.
